CopenHot!
Well it seems as if i am falling very far behind on my blogging here! So much has happened in the last 2 weeks so I’ll break it up into 2 posts ;) First up: Birthday weekend in Copenhagen!
Well, first comes valentines day! Izzy, Callyn and I celebrated after class with Bubble waffle AKA heaven in a waffle (see below). Then we cooked a lovely dinner of spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread with Rianna and ate at Izzy and Callyn’s apartment in the center of the city.
Last Friday was my birthday and we had a long and exciting day of activities planned to celebrate. It started off not so great at 8am when the toilet in our apartment broke and I had to furiously bike into the center to pee at a café. But it was all ok because I met Izzy and Callyn at Studenterhuset where Izzy treated me to a birthday chai latte and a croissant! Studenterhuset is great because with your student ID you can get a coffee and a croissant for only 20kr (a STEAL compared to Espresso House— i still love you EH). We still had some time before class so we sat on a bench in the square drinking our coffee for a bit. Then, Bronte, Greta and I figured out how to get onto the roof of DIS and caught an awesome view of the city before our first lecture!
After classes, Izzy, Callyn and I went to go stock up on champagne and gin (for our drink of choice of course: gin and tonics) before meeting up with Mia and Rianna to go down to the harbor and pop the bubbly! It was shockingly sunny and warm so it was super nice to sit and drink by the water before the next activity.
After champagne extravaganza came the best part of the night: CopenHot! We booked tub at the hot tub spa that is on the water in Copenhagen, and got there at 6 just after the sun set. We even discovered we could take the harbor bus to get there and use our transportation passes on it! The spa was beautiful and lit up with twinkly lights and I was really excited to just chill in the hot tub and watch the lights of the city across the water. BUT, lucky us, only a few minutes after we got into our tub, one of the managers came up to us and told us that there was a cancellation for a sailing hot tub spa and offered it to us for free!
Of course we accepted and we got to sit in a floating hot tub sailing around the harbor complete with a little stove for roasting s’mores and a floating drink cooler and speaker. It was AMAZING. Such a cool experience! We even got to do a few polar plunges into the icy water and clamber back into the warm water with our wine and ciders. We spent an hour and a half out there with our friendly captain who chatted with us the whole time and even brought us a speaker so that we could play our own music! When we finally dried off and changed back into our warm clothes (it is still February in Denmark after all— being outside in a bathing suit for too long is ambitious), we hopped on the bus home to get some dinner and then get ready to go out. We ended up having a little party in our apartment with Callyn, Mia, Rianna, Zach, Lav, Jerry, and a few others before heading to our favorite meatpacking district clubs: Bakken and Jolene.
On Saturday morning, I miraculously dragged myself out of bed for an adventure in the countryside to go find the Hidden Giants: huge wooden troll-like creatures that are scattered in the woods around the country. Lav, Jerry, Maria, Marie and I took the train at 10am to Albertslund and had a great time walking through the town, and around the trails and the lake near the giants. It was a beautiful and warm day and it felt great to be walking outside and get out of a city for a little while. We found two: Lille Tilde, and Thomas on the Mountain (a bit of a misnomer: Denmark has no mountains to speak of, only glorified hills).
After trekking around for a while, we found a little restaurant to eat lunch at before making the journey home! We stopped at Assistens Cemetery on our way back to Thorsgade and it was a really pretty spot to walk around the gardens and we got to see Hans Christian Andersen’s grave as well! As soon as i got home, I ended up leaving again with Mia, Zach, and Mia’s friend Jesse to watch the sunset over Pebble lake, only a few minutes from the apartment: a great end to a great day.
